| Theya
Apartment, Gouvia |
|
From
the lofty position of ‘Theya Apartment’, you can
revel in the most intoxicating birds-eye view of the remains
of an 18th century Venetian arsenal, Gouvia beach and Marina,
across the waters to the Church of Ipapandi in Kommeno and
the mountainous Albanian coast beyond. |

Seclusion
is often only found at the expense of accessibility, forcing
those who do not wish to drive whilst on holiday to compromise.
We were therefore delighted to discover this first floor apartment,
(which is one of four) occupying a truly magical spot a three
minutes walk above the shingle beach at Gouvia. Theya, named
after the Greek word ‘view’, seemed the most obvious
name for this peaceful accommodation in a natural setting with
easy access to a good choice of beaches, shops and tavernas
without the need to hire a car.

The apartment is situated on the first
and second floors with the friendly Greek owners and their three dogs
living below, but not overlooking the apartment and thereby ensuring
the seclusion of guests staying here. Access up a short flight of steps,
leads you straight into the open plan kitchen, separate small shower
room with wc, dining room and lounge area with fantastic views from
the sea facing balcony in front.

Taking the stairs up, leads
you to the second floor where the main double bedroom with A/C and
en-suite bathroom and small washing machine it has exactly the same
sea views as the lounge below. The twin and single bedrooms are at
the rear of the apartment, with built in wardrobes and a small narrow
balcony. |

The twin bedroom has beds with a difference! The second single bed is a 'pull
out bed' with matress from underneath the first single bed, making the room
spacious during the day, and easy to use for the night time.
There is another
separate bathroom with full sized bath, wc and basin for these rooms
to share.
To the front and side of the apartment, sharing the same beguiling vista, is
a small seated area with outdoor furnature for those wanting to unwind without
the effort of walking to the nearby beach. |

Yachtsmen
will have certainly heard of Gouvia , which has one of the
best organised and beautiful marinas in the Mediterranean,
and almost joined with Kondokali , is an old fishing
village with an interesting history. On August 29th
1537, the Turkish fleet, landed
at Gouvia, bringing ruin to the whole area. They failed to
take the Old Fortress, despite a siege lasting twelve
days. Two centuries later, they made another landing
at Gouvia, again with the town as the target, but
left after a month long siege. The Corfiots attributed
their salvation to Saint Spiridon. Subsequently,
the Venetians fortified the harbour at Gouvia and built a shipyard
to maintain and repair their boats, which at the same time
serviced passing vessels. Today, although now roofless,
you can wander through the Venetian arsenal grounds
on your way to the beach at Gouvia.
