Rock House, Nr Paleokastritsa

Perched on a hillside just off the main road leading down to Paleokastritsa, with a backdrop of large rocky mountains, you will find Rock House, aptly named, about one kilometer from the village centre and five sandy beaches of Paleokastritsa. Appearances can be deceptive though, as it only takes ten minutes by car to reach the village

So beautiful is the setting of Rock House that it is just the sort of place where you could stay all day and never want to move. From the main balcony there is a glorious panorama across the tree tops and the deep blue sea to Paleokastritsa; this lovely view can also be enjoyed from the living area and from the double ensuite bedroom – you can even lie in bed and revel in the marvelous vista. French windows open from both these rooms on to the balcony and there is another smaller balcony leading from the twin bedroom.

The accommodation is on the first floor, reached by paved exterior steps leading from the side to the rear of the house. Car parking for the house is next to these steps, making it easy to load and unload from your vehicle.

The homely interior comprises a very light and airy, open plan kitchen and dining room, leading through to a comfortable lounge with an open fireplace, three bedrooms (1 double with ensuite bathroom and two twin bedrooms) and a separate shower room.

The view over the sea is gorgeous in the late afternoon when the golden glow of the sun silhouettes the feathery tips of the cypress trees directly in view, the gnarled olive trees on the opposite hillside and the birdsong: it is even more evocative at night when you can sit on your balcony and watch, in a frame of trees, the lights twinkling in houses in Paleokastritsa and trace the shadowy, mysterious outline of the two main hills as they border the sea ahead and overlook the beaches of Paleokastritsa.

Beautiful terracotta floor tiles, wooden ceilings in the lounge and main bedroom, quality modern furnishings and attractive colour co-ordinated fabrics make the interiors exceptionally smart and stylish.

Paleokastritsa has a number of small coves and offers a choice of beach to visit every day!  Regular boat trips to the neighbouring resort of Liapades and to the ‘Blue Caves’ located just off the resort, Scuba Diving, Watersports and boat hire can all be enjoyed from Paleokastritsa

Perched on a rock overlooking the resort is the 18th Century working Monastery of Theodokou, open daily to visitors it boasts a working Olive Press, small Chapel and spectacular views from its elevated position.

A short drive from Rock House lay the villages of Krini, Vistonas and Makrades.  The Angelokastro, located just behind the village of Krini now in a state of ruin, rises high above the village, its’ battlements still visible, a footpath will take you to the top to enjoy unrivalled views from its vantage points.

The villagers of the agricultural settlements of Makrades and Vistonas regularly sell their wares to visitors passing through, freshly pressed Olive Oil, Corfiot Honey, and locally made village wine, can all be bought very reasonably from their little roadside stalls.

Nearby Liapades is situated at the northern end of an area called “The Ropa Valley” and above the bay of Liapades. This is an area of forest, vineyards and small plots of agricultural land. The village is picturesque and has the typical Ionian architecture. Is has about 1000 inhabitants. The village is up on the hillside and so separate from Liapades Beach. Set in a quiet, sheltered bay surrounded by sheer cliffs with mountains behind, the mainly shingle beach is very pretty. On the beach are a few sun loungers with umbrellas, small boats for hire and a couple of tavernas.

Liapades is a lovely village and a great choice for walkers, nature lovers or those who just enjoy an ‘off the beaten track’ style holiday. There are several routes to take and if you happen to loose your way there will be plenty of old ladies sitting on their steps, chatting. Ask for “Platea” in Greek, that means square and they will be only too happy to help you. Once you reach the village square, you can sit at one of the many cafe-bars with all the locals and experience the Greek way of life. Try an ouzo or even Tzizibeer (Ginger-beer). Tzizibeer is a refreshing drink only made on this island and sold in very few cafes. It is made from fresh lemons and ginger and has no preservatives. It is only produced in the hot summer months as the sun is needed to make it.

There is also a beautiful church in the square that has been fully restored to its original state. The church is called St. Anastasias and was built around 1600-1650. Have a look inside and take photographs of the beautifully painted ceiling and pictures. Well worth a visit! If you are lucky you may even see a wedding or christening take place.

You may even see a donkey heavily loaded with hay or wood. (Please ask before taking photos of locals as not everyone likes their photograph being taken).

Rock House affords a very scenic hillside location on the outskirts of Paleokastritsa – far enough from the village to be peaceful yet close enough to all amenities. Unlike many other properties which are intended solely for summer occupation, Rock House will offer all the comforts of a real family home.
